Contrary to the preconception of many consumers the main advantage is the better quality of the products. Most of the Chinese manufacturers have powerful factories, with much more developed infrastructures compared to those of the local manufacturers for the fast fashion market in France or Prato, it makes them much more professional. Their products and finishing touches are often meticulous, the seams are well made, the products lines processes are proven with teams of stylists, laundry tests etc. The products are more sophisticated, et sometimes also less expensive, let’s not forget that. Chinese manufacturers also took more and more of the world market shares due to the very low prices they offer. Another rather sizeable asset is that you can simply have everything made. Accessories, leather goods, denim, large units, etc., the choice is almost unlimited!
All this huge organisation also poses some disadvantages, and some constraints that should be taken into account if you want to have your products manufactured in China.
First, the long term management means some constraints you should be aware of. When you order with a Chinese manufacturer, the production delay is almost always about a month long, and another month of delay for the delivery, for at least two months waiting. Let’s not forget the administrative part: shipping, payment, approval samples, etc. that I shall explain in further details in another post. It’s a more risky supply, since you have to plan your stocks on a longer term, and it make resupply almost impossible. You have to order in larger quantities, even if it is still possible to order smaller quantities from the Chinese importers in Paris and Aubervilliers stocks, but in that case the conditioning possibilities are limited: you have to take the colours packs, sizes and ratios as they are. Note that concerning sizes, you should take into account that they sometimes are Asian size, with smaller cuts compared to Europeans ones. Clothes will be branded “made in China”, with the label of the wholesaler: therefore it isn’t possible to brand the products with your own.

Last, take the Chinese New Year into account! In China this tradition still matters a lot and everything is closed for three to four weeks! To go around this ‘hole’ in the calendar, manufacturers have a productivity peak before they close to anticipate the orders. If you have to supply near that period, be aware and anticipate: place your orders earlier and/or in larger quantities.
All these constraints contribute nonetheless to the advantages. It is due to those limitations imposed by Chinese manufacturers that they can afford to manufacture in larger quantities, with more competitive prices, in a vast array of quality products.
