“Thanks to our App, ContiConnect On-Site and our Conti Urban tyre family, customers are able to retrieve tyre data very easily and conveniently from a smartphone via Bluetooth,” comments Kalyan Yalamanchili, head of Digital Solutions at Continental Tires EMEA.
Conti Urban tyres can be incorporated into the ContiConnect 2.0 digital tyre management solution, and by doing so Yalamanchili speaks of helping coach and local public transport operators offer a “reliable, efficient and eco-friendly mobility network.” But digital tyre management also makes it possible to minimise real-life fleet costs. “Tyre sensors additionally provide the basis for capitalising on benefits such as remote fleet monitoring and predictive service planning in future,” adds Yalamanchili.
Continental fleet customers have been using the intelligent Conti Urban tyre for many years now and Yalamanchili believes they will benefit greatly from its built-in sensor technology: “Experience has shown that ContiConnect can reduce punctures by around 30 per cent for customers, achieve a fuel saving of two per cent and increase usable mileage by some ten per cent.”

The tyre sensors transmit live data on tyre temperature, pressure and predicted mileage via Bluetooth. Fleet management then accesses this data using a stationary Yard Reader station or telematics units. If any data anomalies are detected, immediate action can be taken. The intelligent Conti Urban tyres therefore help to reduce vehicle breakdowns and downtime, lower carbon emissions and cut costs. “This creates the optimum conditions for carrying satisfied passengers through cities aboard well-utilised buses in an environmentally sound manner and continuing to be a successful transport operator in the future,” concludes Continental.
The Conti Urban Green concept tire contains nearly 50 percent renewable and recycled materials while the tread itself is composed of just under 70 percent renewable material. This includes sustainable materials including rapeseed oil, silica from rice husk ashes, and responsibly produced natural rubber. While retreading worn out tires is a sustainable practice in its own right, Continental takes it a step further with the ContiTread EcoPlus Green concept. Thanks to the high content of renewable materials used in the tread, retreading with the ContiTread EcoPlus Green concept increases the overall share of sustainable materials to 90 percent. This special rubber compound, along with wider tread and exceptionally rigid profile allowed Continental’s tire developers to achieve considerable reductions in rolling resistance and optimize noise emissions.
With tighter margins, increased competitiveness and mounting environmental concerns, fleet digitalization has never been more important to sustainable business operation. For this reason, the Conti Urban Green concept was designed with built-in intelligent sensors that pair with Continental's tire monitoring platform, ContiConnect. This digital tire management system for fleets large to small serves as the foundation for greener fleet management. ContiConnect digital tire monitoring provides fleet managers with real-time data so they can keep their tires running at optimal performance levels. This improves fuel efficiency, reduces maintenance and replacement costs and maintains operator safety. The modular format of ContiConnect can be tailored to any customer's needs all with the aim of lowering emissions, conserving resources, and keeping vehicles on the road.
